This year I am excited to incorporate a new grading system in my health class. To move away from the 0-100 scale and use the 1-4 criteria discussed at the PLC Summit.
Shawn, that's exicting. I know standards-based grading was a topic of discussion on this blog last year so hopefully you can get some input from your colleagues who are considering this, too.
I am co-teaching for the first time this year. My co-teacher and I are planning on doing a lot of station, parallel and team teaching this school year!
I am also co-teaching this year for the first time, so I am also planning on using many strategies in regards to instructional strategies! I am also excited to have a STAR board for the first time this year. I am excited to learn that device and develop lessons with it!
I am looking forward to integrating more technology by using ipads in our physical education curriculum. Hopefully by the end of the school year, we will have a great plan on how to use them with our students and be able to teach other teachers how we are using them.
Like Kathy, I am also looking forward to using technology in the classroom. I am excited to have both a smartboard and an iPad in the classrooms! I used Smart Notebook every day when student teaching so I have some great files for my General Music that I look forward to tweaking and using again! I am interested to see what will work with using the iPad in my classes and having students use it whenever they can, plus syncing my projector with the iPad to use as an interactive presentation tool!
I am planning to go into the classrooms more to do developmental guidance to all students about career planning, social concerns, etc. I am excited to have this opportunity!
I am excited about incorporating math centers into my instruction. I was able to use my curriculum development time to find resources related to math centers and develop some stations.
This year, I would like to integrate independent reading consistently. I went to a PGO on conferring last year and want to put it into practice with my new 7th graders.
I want to figure out and experiment with new technologies and apps. I know many of our students don't have iPads or iPhones, but many of them do. ALSO, when students don't have technology themselves, they can get very creative about getting access to it. They get to know people that do like friends, neighbors, relatives, acquaintences--they seek it out IF they are motivated to do so. Even though our department is not one of the pilot projects for iPads, I bought one myself this summer and am hoping to be ahead of the curve for whenever our school has them. Looking at other postings, I can see others are on the same wavelength!
I am excited for my classroom library. I have brainstorming ways to get students engaged in exploring the library through scavenger hunts, displays, book spine poetry etc. I am excited to see them start playing in the library!
I'm really exciting to start using Celly. It's a way to send reminders to students and parents via text without having to manually enter all of their phone numbers. It can also be used to create polls just like clickers!
I'm excited to be teaching two grade levels this year (7th and 9th). I think the variety of the two subjects will help me grow as a teacher and keep me from always doing the same thing. It will be a challenge and more work than last year, but I believe I will become a better teacher as I learn new strategies that work for different students and subjects.
I am excited to have the oppotunity to be a part of ENCORE at our school. We will have a forty minute block of time everyday where our students will get addtional support/ intervention/ challenge material provided by paras and teachers. I am excited to see the end result.
I am excited to co-teach World History and set up a professional twitter account. I plan to post links and articles relevant and helpful for my students.
I am excited to incorporate our new document camera into the foods classes. This will eliminate 30+ kids crowding around me for food demonstrations and will hopefully allow all kids to get a good view of what techniques I am demonstrating on the screen.
I am excited to be in a new classroom while working with EBD students. Two years ago when I started we were in one classroom that was divided in two small rooms. Last year we moved to a different part of the building with more space, but this year we were able to add to our area and now we have three large classrooms and a processing area.
I finished my Master's this summer and one of the classes I took was on classroom management, something I feel I can always be better at. I am excited to use the plan which I created as my final project. One thing I plan to put in place this year is to have self directed learning time, rather than assigned centers. Another thing that I worked on over the summer was writing curriculum letters for some of the big units we are teaching which I plan to send home before the unit explaining what students will learn, how parents can help at home to extend learning, and also asking them for any materials or resource people they know willing to talk to us about a specific subject. I am hoping to get parents a little more involved this year.
I am excited to implement a consist Current Events assignment into my social studies class this year. I think often times when the school year gets into full swing and time seems to slip away quickly-things like current events are the first things to be thrown to the wayside. I want to challenge myself to not let that happen because I think it is an extremely important way to get kids connected to the world around them.
I'm excited to start (keep the system running for) problem solving binders. Often times, my student last year would solve their problems in the classroom and then fall back on their same behaviors (requiring another problem solving session). This year I am trying to implement a way for them to keep track of their own problems and refer back to their previous solutions without needing adult facilitation everytime the problem occurs.
Ryan, I love the idea of the students driving their problem solving and referring back to previous solutions. Great way to generalize such an essential skill! Perhaps there could be some time at a vertical team meeting in future where we could all share great ideas that are working in our classrooms!
I incorporated a "relaxation station" into my EBD classroom. It's a great way to maximize the space without disrupting small group instruction when there is a student in need. It seems to be working very well! I've also incorporated an independent processing piece that lends itself to trending data which identifies trouble spots in their day.
Something I am excited about doing different this year is making my students' writer's notebooks more than just a place for drafting, editing, revising, etc. We have already brainstormed a list of ideas of things we can right about (it will be an ongoing list that the kids can add ideas onto themselves). They also had a chance to decorate their notebook to really make it their own. I have added into my writer's workshop block, a time just for journaling. I want my students to see the importance of both structured writing (for academic purposes) and free journaling.
