Professional Growth over the Summer

I just started thinking about my summer plans and the possibility of doing the SORLA workshops. I think it is so awesome that Shakopee reimburses for SORLA, and also may give a stipend? I feel really lucky to be in a district that is committed to professional growth. I am wondering what other people are doing over the summer to contribute to professional growth. I think it is really important to rest and relax, but this summer I would like to take more opportunity to expand myself with many different areas--especially since I will be teaching the more "junior high" grades--7-9. I keep thinking I need to be more trained with technology--Smartboard use, etc. Or maybe it is learning more techniques with classroom management designed for this specific age. Am interested in what people are doing . . .

  1. I like the idea of thinking of what professional development I'll be working on this summer. I would like to register for SORLA, especially since we can get paid for many of the sessions - if we don't want to use the hours for Phse 3. So I am thinking of registering for that. But I am hoping to get a summer school job teaching in Chanhassen. It's not many hours a day, but I like summer school because it reminds me why I entered the teaching profession. Classroom numbers are typically fairly small and these are usually the students who fall through the cracks during the school year. So I like being able to build relationships with them and help them develop skills that they will hopefully use for sucess next year.

Also, I will be reading as much as I can. The more I read, the better a resource I can be for my students.

  2. I think my goal over the summer is to read. The book studies have been very helpful to me and there are tons of books out there that have really helped me grow professionally. I don't think I'll be doing SORLA but I will be doing edcamp, which JP emailed us all about. Sounds like a fun event!

Also, with all the changes that occurring for next year, my PLC will be doing a ton of curriculum writing.

  3. Oh and the state legislature just made huge cuts to professional development funding. Hopefully this doesn't drastically affect our district!
