I have been reading through the postings about getting kids to do their homework--especially papers. Are we at the point where we provide students with laptops? We could write grants so that all students are provided with the same laptop, like they do in colleges now. That way, we provide backup tech support, and they learn, they get papers done and typed, they have no excuse for not being done with work.
Would this be feasible? What do people think?
Ann,
ReplyDeleteMany people are discussing this. As part of the Technology Integration Committee, I'm aware that a 1:1 ratio of either ipad/laptop to students is definitely something our district is interested in learning more about.
However, I think that you won't be able to easily do this without the full might of the district behind you. The tech staff, the school board, and administration would have to iron out the details.
Stayed tuned! I have a feeling that in the next 5 years, something like this could be a reality!
I hope this type of technology integration comes sooner rather than later! I agree with Ann that it will help students with getting their work in on time. The bigger issue for me, however, is that I don't think our students are using and learning how to use technology at a rate that is sufficient for what many of them will have to do when they enter the "real world." At the junior high, we have three computer labs and it is often times very hard to get access to them (especially with the increased amount of testing being done). Therefore, I go months without having the students use technology. Obviously money is an obstacle, but I think we are doing them a disservice.
