Today we were reading another fun chapter in Pippi Longstockings. She of course, is always getting into trouble. Well, I asked the students where she was going next, one student yelled out, "Juvenile Hall." Wow! I had no clue that second grade students even knew about juvenile hall. Crazy! Well, Pippi didn't go to juvenile hall in this chapter, instead she had a nice coffee party. What a day! :)
I think it is always so surprising to see where students schema is...and isn't. Last year I read a short story with a holisten cow in it. I guess, growing up in a rural community, I always knew what these were, but it was only my students originally from Africa who knew about the types of cows. This totally makes sense when I think about it, but I did not anticipate it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, this summer I was teaching summer school and was talking to my students about camping. None of my students had been camping. I just think that is so interesting. Things that I consider "essential" to Minnesota living isn't even on many of my students' radar. It just reminds me to always plan to build and teach background information before diving into a text.
I always am very careful when I give examples when teaching schema because I never know what is going to come out of the mouths of my first graders. We have just started talking about it and I feel like the kiddos are doing a nice job really relating and having meaningful connections. There are always those kiddos who just pretend to have a connection and end up "stretching the truth" to have something to contribute. I can't help but smile when a child tells me schema that has nothing to do with anything we are talking about! I am always entertained at my job! :)
